Summer is for Reading!
First of all, Elaine, et al., thanks for inviting me to contribute to the Knight Agency Blog. Makes me feel all proud and giddy - like a kid who gets to sit at the grownup's table.
So here we go. The topic I was given was 'Summer Reading for the Young at Heart', which makes me smile because its like it was hand-selected for me. I'm a total book junkie and this time of year I revert back to being a teenager all over again - long days lounging with a book by the pool, even longer nights under the summer stars. Seriously. Slip on a pair of way-cool sunglasses and some flip-flops and summer takes me right back. Of course, there's the whole thing about how I never really grew up in the first place, but that's another post.
For me, a great summer read will let me roll with the young-at-heart vibe. That's why I love YA. Admittedly, I devour YA any time of year, but in the summer particularly, certain books call to me. Give me a little Scott Westerfield, Stephenie Meyer, Meg Cabot, or Sarah Dessen and I'm happy.
This year is an extra kick because my own baby gets to be one of those fun summer reads. Earlier this month, my book DEATH BY BIKINI was released and is making the rounds on summer reading lists as a great YA mystery with a beach setting and a splash of romance. I couldn't have planned it better if I had tried. Which I didn't. Plan for it to be a summer read, I mean. It just kind of worked out that way. Summer-ish title, killer cover design. I'm telling you, it's the magic of summer!
So, what books are on your summer TBR list? Bonus points if it includes some great YA!

Your book, obviously:) Because it looks fab and I know my book, Read My Lips, is on your list. I am also going to sit down and read Stephany Meyers books because I tink I am the only person on the planet who hasn't read it.
Teri
Death by Bikini is a great title. I love Scott Westerfield, too. The top of my YA TBR has Wake on it -- I'm seriously envious of the premise in that one.
And TJ -- can't wait for Read My Lips to come out (I sent my daughter to get it for a friend's daughter two weeks ago...oops, it wasn't out yet...my daughter was not happy with me :-)
Kelly
my summer TBR list... I have this recurring dream of finishing the last Stephenie Meyer (Eclipse) so I'm ready for the next one come August *bg* Also waiting are Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist, The Geography Club, more Meg Cabot Mediator books... oh, yeah, and a re-read of Death by Bikini! I totally can't wait to read that poolside!
~Jen McA
I've gone into a postapocalyptic spin in my reading choices, trying to catch up on my once-favorite theme when I was in high school (yeah, I was a dark little puppy), and that includes a YA - Susan Beth Pfeffer's Life As We Knew It.
Berta
Top of my summer reading list is Death By Bikini...again! Like Jen said, it's the best pool-side book. I'm rereading the Harry Potter series because I need my fix of that crew from time to time. For other YA reads, I'll be looking at what everyone else is reading and taking notes. *s*
Ginger
Teri - I'm counting the days until RML! And yes, you really should get on the Stephenie Meyer bandwagon... if only so we can discuss!
Oooh, Kelly, I just finished Wake. Enviable premise *and* fabulous execution.
Hi, Jen! I have Nick and Nora's Infinite Play List on my TBR list, but I'll have to check out The Geography Club. *scribbling down notes...*
Berta, my daughter and I read Life as We Knew It for a book group selection a while back. Good book.
Death by Bikini, of course! I'm also dying to read The Magic Thief, Breaking Dawn, Prince Caspian and more of the Clique summer collection. :)
Death by Bikini, of course. The next Scott Westerfeld I haven't gotten to yet. Ink Exchange, which is in my stack. And so many more...
d'oh! have to do the head-smacking thing now since it finally occurred to me why the name Kelly McClymer sounded so familiar. Kelly, if you're still lurking, I enjoy the heck out of your books!
And Linda, I'm totally with you about Wake -- the execution is brilliant plus I couldn't put that book down which is saying a lot in my crazed world! In fact, why aren't a holding a copy of Death by Bikini in my hands right now??? oh, right. typing. *ggl*

My TBR List is a little overwhelming right now! I've already read DBB but I think I may just have to do a reread to prepare for book 2's release! I still haven't read the final Traveling Pants book so that's on the list. And I have yet to dip a toe into the Stephanie Meyer pool so I may need to jump into that this summer!
I can't wait to read Death By Bikini. Congratulations! I'm sure it will make the rounds here in San Diego. My two teenage girls and all their friends are readers. We're all waiting for Meyers new book in August, and we've also read all the Westerfeld books. I'm also a kid at heart. My favorite read is YA,and I also write YA. Thanks for some great new choices from authors represented by TKA!:-)
I've been busy guerilla marketing Death by Bikini, so my copy has been hijacked by a teenage boy. The nerve of that kid. I'll have to re-read it later on this summer. I've just finished the new Rick Riordan book (fab), and I'm thinking I should read those Stephanie Myers books. Otherwise, like Ginger, I'm a taking notes. *g*
Hi, Ginger! Um, you know I can give you a whole lot of YA recommendations! : ) Several of which are by TKA sistahs!
Jessica, I've got two daughters who can't wait for a certain Canterbury series to launch next year... Oh, I haven't read The Magic Thief yet. *more notes...*
Susan, I need to read Wicked Lovely so I can get to Ink Exchange!
Hey, Nicole, are they're doing another Traveling Pants movie, too, right? Fun series.
Man, do I have some reading to do!
I am anxiously awaiting my time that I'll be able to lounge on the deck of the cruise ship and dive into some good books. 2 weeks!!! :) I'm going to read "Shadow People" by Joyce McDonald. (EVERYONE, please read my latest blog about how I came across that book!) Of course, I need to re-read "Death by Bikini" and savor it this time. :)
See you in 2 weeks on the ship!!!
Ha! I hit return and it sent...
Trish, I hope DBB *does* make the rounds in San Diego! Oh, and that you and your girls enjoy it. : )
Julie, can I just tell you how tickled I am that your son hijacked the book? The last couple of weeks doing school visits I was actually surprised and thrilled that quite a few boys lined up for the signings. Maybe it's the cover... : D
Hi, Donna! Are you serious? Only one book for the cruise? Well, I'll probably have a suitcase full of them, so you can borrow... : ) I seriously get palpitations at the thought of finishing a book and having nothing to read the rest of the trip. Gaaah! Makes me cringe just thinking about it!
Hi Linda - thanks to you I will be reading your book soon - YAY! I have a ton of YA on my summer reading list:
Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart
A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth Bunce
Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty by Jody Gehrman
Evolution, Me & Other Freaks of Nature by Robin Brande
The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson
Skin Hunger by Kathleen Duey
Violet on the Runway and Violet by Design by Melissa Walker
And I want to check out Scott Westerfeld's Midnighters Series!
Linda,
The cover ROCKS!!! DEATH BY BIKINI sounds like a great read. :D The cover is intriguing.
I love that you never grew up. Life has more magic to it when you have a young heart. :D
Hugs, Nancy
We'll be moving back to the U.S. this summer from Italy, so I can't wait to hit the bookstore--all those titles in English. :-) I'll be sure to look for yours, Linda!
Oh, and thanks Berta - mention postapocalyptic or dystopia to me and I am all over it! Great suggestion.
Sara Zarr's new one Sweethearts is next on my tbr pile. I LOVED Story of a Girl so much, I'm hanging out to read this new one.
Death by Bikini, of course.... can't wait to read that.
Oh, Lenore - that's a great list. I need to copy a couple of those down! (And, of course, I'm tickled you're including DBB in the mix.)
Nancy, yeah, I kinda like the not growing up thing. Embarrasses my kids sometimes, though... : )
Natalie, if it's like it was for me when we moved back from Japan, you'll be like a kid in a candy shop, just walking into a bookstore! To where will you be moving?
Sally, oh! Yes. I didn't have that on my list yet, either.
My TBR summer pile that I'm staring at right now:
YA:
How to Be Bad
Death By Bikini :)
Cruel Summer
Frenemies
Adult:
The Richest Season (column reading)
Secret Life of Bees
Carpool Diem (column reading)
Yikes, I need to start reading. Have a great rest of the week, Gerb. :)
Oh no, not just one book. That was just the one that was on my mind at the time. I still have my other list, like The Anatomy of Deception, The Highlander series, and possibly Memoirs of a Geisha.
As for Bikini touring... Britty & I are already on it! (In Utah, at least.) I can do San Diego in a couple of weeks too! :)
Um....doesn't look like you'll be commentless. Hope the book does well!
Death By Bikini is def on the summer reading list along with Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, King Dork, and the Violet series! I love having series to read for summer. I am finishing up Stephenie Meyer's right now. I did read a big old hardcover of the second book poolside in Florida this April and am glad that the Violet books will be more appropriate pool-size!
