Super Big Mega Gigantic Contest Announcement! She’s Just That Into You: Speed Dating with Deidre Knight
UPDATE - We're thrilled that so many of you plan to enter Deidre's contest and can't wait until tomorrow. That said, some questions have arisen that were not outlined in the rules last week. Please check out our updated guidelines below in red. Looking forward to tomorrow!
Just one more update... We're expected a pretty big response tomorrrow morning, so please don't get frustrated if you have trouble getting on the blog for any reason. Keep checking back with us periodically until you're able to get through. Best of luck!
What are you asking Santa for this year? A cashmere sweater? Flat screen TV? What about a gift that keeps on giving well into the New Year and beyond – literary representation?
*If it is determined at the end of the contest that the materials submitted are not on par with The Knight Agency's needs, representation will not be offered. In this case, Deidre will provide a final winner with a general manuscript critique.
**The random drawing for a first chapter critique will be selected from the first 125 entries sent in during the specified entry period from 8:00am ET to 2pm ET on Tuesday, November 30th, 2010.
HOW IT WORKS:
DAY ONE: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH--
1. The first 125 people to leave a comment (including their name or pen name) in the contest post on The Knight Agency Blog will be automatically entered and should promptly send in the first three pages of their completed manuscript to Contests@KnightAgency.net. You will be able to leave comments from 8:00am ET to 12pm ET to gain entry in to the contest. Your first 3 pages must be received by 2pm ET.
The name entrants choose to post in the comment section MUST ALSO BE noted in their emailed submission. If we cannot match the name provided in your email to the one left in the comment section – your entry will be deleted without notice.
2. Only the first 125 entrants will receive email notifications about contest results (i.e. whether they’ve made it to the next round or not). If you’re not one of the 125, please do not email your 3 pages – we will not reply.
DAY TWO: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2ND--
3. Deidre will select up to 25 entries to advance to the second round from the initial 125 entries. The names of the selected entries will be posted publicly on The Knight Agency blog by the end of the business day Thursday, December 2nd, and the selected writers will also be notified via the provided email address to submit 10 pages. The pages must be emailed to Contests@KnightAgency.net by Friday, December 3rd at 12:00pm ET.
Those not chosen to advance to the next round will receive email notifications. However, please remember this is speed dating. There will be no critiques, recommendations or explanations given as to why an entry was picked or not at any time during the contest. Please do not contact us for any type of feedback. Not being chosen doesn’t mean your literary dreams are over. It just means your perfect literary match is elsewhere. Remember, there are other fish in the sea.
DAY THREE: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 8TH–
4. On the third day of the contest, Deidre will pick an undetermined amount of entrants to send in the first three chapters of their manuscripts based on the ten pages sent by entrants the previous week.
5. The selected entrants for Day Three will be posted on The Knight Agency blog and notified via email. They must submit their first three chapters no later than 12:00pm ET, Thursday, December 9th.
DAY FOUR: MONDAY, DECEMBER 13TH–
6. On the fourth day of the contest, Deidre will select an undetermined amount of entrants to submit their full manuscript. The names of those advancing to the final round will be posted on The Knight Agency blog, and they will also be notified via email. Full manuscripts must be received no later than 12:00pm ET, Tuesday, December 14th.
THE BIG REVEAL: MONDAY, DECEMBER 20TH--
7. On the fifth day of the contest, Monday, December 20th, Deidre will reveal her new client on The Knight Agency blog, and the winner will also be notified via email. If none of the material submitted meets the needs of The Knight Agency at this time, the prize of representation will be void. However, a final winner will be selected to receive a general manuscript critique from Deidre. The first chapter critique winner will also be announced.
IMPORTANT DETAILS:
- International participants are welcome.
- If another Knight agent is actively considering your query, you are not eligible for the contest (active means an agent has informed you that they are considering your manuscript and would like to review more material)
- If we have previously rejected your manuscript, please do not enter this contest unless your work has undergone a substantial rewrite
- The only genres that will NOT be accepted, are those that are outlined in our submission guidelines. Here is an excerpt from our guidelines page regarding what we do not represent:
- Only full manuscripts can be entered.
- Contest is open to both unpublished and published authors.
- To find out what type of books the agency DOES NOT accept, please visit our submission guidelines page.
- We will check out spam filters to make sure no one gets caught there; however, if your email becomes otherwise delayed, deleted or falls through a black hole – your entry will be declared void. We are not responsible for lost entries.
- Your materials must be sent in by the deadlines outlined above. Late submissions, even by mere minutes, will result in forfeiture of your entry.
- Everyone, and we mean EVERYONE, will receive the same generic “yay” or “nay” reply letting them know whether or not they have advanced to the next round. Please don’t ask us for any additional explanation or feedback of any kind. Deidre is reading these entries as fast as she can while maintaining her busy schedule – so there’s no time for hand-holding.
- Do not send your entry to any other email address besides Contest@KnightAgency.net. Failure to follow this instruction will result in deletion of your entry.
- Multiple entries are not allowed. If you enter more than one manuscript, only your first entry will be counted.
- Corrections are not allowed. What you send in the first time is what Deidre will judge. No exceptions. Make sure you’re attaching the right document.
- Do not send pages more than we ask for at any time. If we ask for 10 pages and you send 20, your entry will be deleted without notice.
- To protect ourselves from potential viruses and other random flotsam and jetsam, the first three pages you send in should be pasted within the body of your email. Not attached separately in a Word document.
However, once we’ve established communication after the first round, subsequent pages, should be properly formatted for submission and sent as Word document attachments. The Word document should ALWAYS include a cover page with your name, physical address, genre and overall word count.
- The only information that we will ever reveal about you publicly is the name you provide. The only places we will post your name is on our company blog, and possibly in the company newsletter.
- The winner of the random drawing must claim their prize via email to Contests@KnightAgency.net 30 days from notification of their win. The critique will be returned within eight weeks after receipt of materials.
- All entrants will be opted in to The Knight Agency newsletter. The newsletter contains a link that allows you to easily opt out at any time.
If you have any further questions about this contest, please email Contests@KnightAgency.net.

Fab contest, though 8am ET is 5am on the west coast!!
What a fantastic contest! I would love to join in but Nephele is currently considering my full so I will be watching from the sidelines!
I'm really excited! As for the early hour for West Coast...the thing is, I have a really short period of time to turn all these around b/c I have a personal obligation on Thurs 12/2. So we've put lots of time/thought into the best way to make all this happen before Christmas. That said, we might consider pushing it to 9 or 10 am Eastern, but I need to think about it. Have a great Thanksgiving! D
Sounds exciting! And the time is no big deal, I'd get up at 3 a.m. for this one...
Sounds great! What a fun idea and I love the creative title.
This is an exciting contest opportunity. Definitely marking my calendar! Heh.
What a fun idea!
I assume, though, there's no point in entering if my manuscript is not in one of the genres you normally represent?
It will be 4AM in Alaska but I don't mind :)
Oh Bugger. I can't enter because I live on the earth's backside. I shall go and weep in the corner now. *sniff sniff*
Thanks for this amazing opportunity! But please don't change the time... That would be after midnight for me! Although like most others, I would probably stay up all night =)
Solid!
Hi Deidre,
I'm in. All the dates of the contest are on my iCal and I'm ready to go.
Stella
I hate to say it but my brain is fried due to several people (can't get an accurate count) are coming over for Thanksgiving Dinner, and I still am not ready, and I am doing the NaNo and I am behind on word count, so I am working day and night to finish this by end of month. A friend sent me a message and told me about this Speed Dating thing so I want to enter. I will get a little sleep and then reread how to enter. I sure want to be a part of this, sounds like so much fun.
What a wonderful way to start the holiday season. Thanks for this magical opportunity, Deidre.
Now, which manuscript will dazzle you?
:)

Love stories from the crossroad of . . .
small town and suspense.
What a lovely opportunity - best of luck to all!
Sounds great to me. I'm in too.
West Coast resident here, but I shall make a point of being online, waiting to post, at 5am.
So very worth it.
Definitely something I'd be interested in. I can be there if I avoid the 4 am writing binges. LOL

Great contest!
What a wonderful bit of excitement for the holiday. Many thanks.
If I'm an Aussie, can I enter this contest? It seems to great an opportunity to miss - but I might have to.
Cath
Thank you for offering this! I have a query in to another at your fine agency. Just a query. Am I still able to participate?
What a great opportunity!
Thank you.
What a great opportunity. Good luck to all!!

I'm stoked, and I don't care how early I have to set my alarm. It's a small price to pay for a chance to have Deidre Knight read something I've written.
Great idea! I'm in.
I, too, will be waking up early to check this out.
Comment me in. I do have a question. I queried Deirdre in September and haven't heard a word. Is it ok to enter anyway? There's no mention of it in the blog.
I'm in. This sounds like a great opportunity.
Kristen:
If you dont receive a query answer from us within a few weeks--ever--always query again. That said, I don't accept direct queries. Those are handled through submissions@knightagency.net. So in the future, keep that in mind. For this contest, though, of course you can still enter.
Can't wait to see who all enters! D
What word count range are you looking for? I have a finished short story I would like to submit.
Okay, if another agent already has the submission, you can't enter. If we have passed on your project, and it hasn't been revised, please don't enter. Thanks!
Bummed that I won't be able to comment from work that morning...oh well.
I'm in. It's only one hour earlier for me.
Is this contest only open to US residents? I'm on the other side of the Atlantic in London but I'm in if it's allowed!

I know I'm being very anal. When you say three pages, do you mean single or double-spaced? You stated in the rules that entries with 20 pages instead of 10 would be deleted, but, depending on spacing, my three pages may turn into six.
Double-spaced--good question. So funny, Jia and I labored and labored over these rules, yet new questions have arisen!
Open to anyone around the world who is willing to be up/around at the starting time of 8 am Eastern.
So, just to clarify...I sent a query to one of your agents this last week. Does this mean I shouldn't be setting my alarm clock to the crack of dawn or am I still eligible to enter since I haven't heard back from that agent yet. I wasn't really clear on your earlier post, sorry.
Thank you! This is really a great contest!
Jen, to be clear--no queries should be sent to individual agents, anyway. Per our guidelines, queries are only to be sent to our submissions coordinator. So you should plan to enter the contest. If you then hear from that agent (although you very well might not if it was sent to their private email address), then let them know if it's already part of the contest. Make sense?
Thank you, Deidre! I apologize, I did send the query to the submissions email 'ATTN' a specific agent, not to their personal email address. I'm excited for the contest. Thank you again for clearing that up!
It's probably here somewhere, but I can't find my glasses and well, I'm lost without them. What are your formating requirements? Double-space or single? I'm only asking because the first scene is 3 and a half pages long.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Hi Deidre :) I have a quick question because I would really liek to enter the contest, but I'd hate to be rude here. So, I sent a query to Nephele and, according to your query answering times, her answer should be here on December 1st, exactly one day after the contest begins. See, I'm concerned because I don't want to enter and insult either you or Nephele, but if Nephele decides to pass on my query and I DON'T enter, well... I've just wasted a very valuable opportunity. I want the Knight Agency to represent me, so I want to be clear in this. CAN I enter since Nephele's answer will be here one day after, or not? Thank you :)
I deleted my earlier comment because I worded it poorly.
I checked your agency's submission guidelines and my novel is a genre that your agency does represent. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that you personally do not accept fantasy.
I could not tell from the contest rules if it is possible for an entry from a genre you personally do not represent to win, as it sounds like the prize is representation from you yourself, not just any agent from your agency. If you won't be accepting fantasy, I'm happy to submit my materials the old-fashioned way.
Count me in. My Christmas wish is representation by Knight Agency.

I don't know about you guys but I psyched about this contest. I currently have a YA novel in my drawer that I'm thinking about entering into the contest. Can't wait until Tuesday.
Just heard and I can't wait. What an exciting and appreciated opportunity. I'm crossing my fingers that I'm nimble enough and awake enough to be in the first 125!

I am so happy! This is an awesome contest I am totally in :)
Awesome stuff! Can't wait.
I intend to be there.
Timing question. I have to leave for work at 7:40 AM and don't have email there. Would I still be eligible if I posted 20 minutes early 1?
Quick question. When sending the first pages should it be in the body of the email or as an attachment rtf or doc.
PS in reading the comments I think a couple of spams sneaked in.
Some answers:
1) You can't post early, sorry.
2) I do represent fantasy, but in general, so long as our agency reps the genre, that's all that matters for the contest.
3) Don't worry about having queried us. If you wind up in the contest, simply tell our submisssions coordinator if you're in the "pool" if you advance in the contest.
4) Material should be by attachment in Word.
5) Double-spaced for material.
THANKS!
6:00 a.m. MST, no problem for early birds.
This is exactly what I wanted for Christmas.
Ya know it would be really great if I read to the end of the directions. Could explain why when I began baking cupcakes the first ones didn't turn out so well.
Okay first pages in the body of email. Mea culpa.
one more day and counting, yay
bet everyone here on the west coast has an alarm -- you know we'll all set them for this opportunity
I'm definitely in!
Looking forward to entering!
Thanks for this fantastic contest!
Susan
For the step in the contest when you submit 10 pages should that be the first ten pages of the manuscript (including the 3 pages sent earlier) or any ten pages in your manuscript?
Thank you for doing this contest, I can't wait to enter!
Fun! I have a question-- should one be so lucky as to beat the rush-- should we send in ONLY the first three pages-- or include a query letter? Or maybe just Title/Genre/Word Count? Thanks!!
What a fun opportunity!
Thanks!
How exciting. I can't wait.
Hey Ladies and Gents, just wanted to clear up a bit of confusion about how things should be submitted. Please use the following as a guideline:
Nov 30th -- First three (3) pages of your manuscript sent in the body of an email. Do not include query letters. However, your name (which MUST match the name you left in your blog comment), genre and overall word count of your manuscript would be GREATLY appreciated.
Dec 2nd -- Next ten pages of your manuscript sent as an attachment with cover page including name, physical address, genre and overall word count.(The attachement must include the first 3 pages you intially sent -- so thirteen (13) total. No worries we will include specific instructions should you be contacted for more pages.)
Dec 8th -- First three (3) chapters, plus cover page
Dec 13th -- Full manuscript, plus cover page
Thank you so much for this opportunity.
Great idea. I'm looking forward to entering.
Thanks so much,
Gayle
Sounds like fun.
Thank you for offering this excellent opportunity! I'm definitely in... and betting the first 125 get posted in the first 30 seconds of 8 am EST, lol. Some serious competition, but I'm stoked and prepped for it!
counting down the hours...
A quick question: Is THIS the place we leave our comment to qualify as one of the first 125? (Where there are already 76 comments.) Or will there be a NEW "Contest Blog Entry" for submitting our names and comment? Don't want to blow this chance! Thanks.
Hey Kerry, an official contest post will go up tomorrow morning. That's the one you'll need to leave a comment in. :-)
Can't wait until tomorrow. Good luck everyone.
This is great. Can't wait for tomorrow.
Thank you for the extra info Jia! I've never been so excited to wake up before the sun's out.
Can't wait!
Don't know how quick I am on the draw . . . but would love to give this a shot.
Looking forward.
This sounds like a nice way to submit.I'll be there.
John L. Betcher
Can you tell us exactly what URL we should look for the link on, please? Thanks.
Hi John,
I won't have the exact URL until the post goes live. If you visit the main page, http://knightagency.blogspot.com/, at the appropriate time tomorrow -- you'll find the contest blog front and center. It will be labeled "The Official Post for Speed Dating with Deidre Knight -- Comment Here To Win!"
Let me know if you have any more questions.
What a terrific opportunity. Thanks for doing this.
Seamus Bayne here.
I am in. Please expect my submission tomorrow morning.
THANK YOU
Exciting opportunity! I'll see you tomorrow at 8 am.
Stupid question: do you want that initial email with the first three pages in the body to be double-spaced as well? If so, should we use carriage returns or just copy-paste from whatever word processing program we've used?
77Oh wow what an amazing opportunity!
Thanks for answering all the questions !
I'm in! Great idea!
I will be preparing my comment tonight and get it to my editor for revisions. :-) I cannot afford to miss this up. Thanks for the opportunity.
looking forward to it!
Very exciting way to find a new client! Kudos to the agency and to Deidre for this neat contest! Also, good luck to all the entrants!
I'm looking forward to this opportunity. Thank You for the chance!
Count me in! Representation from Deidre Knight would be the ultimate Christmas gift. I've got my fingers crossed and alarm set.
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!
Hello, this is a wonderful opportunity and I also want to be sure to follow directions. After reading all the posts, I am still unclear as to whether it is OK for the original 3 single-spaced pages to turn into 6 once double-spacing is applied? Thanks!
Great idea! I can't wait to enter. I'll probably be late for work but it's worth it. Santa came early this year.
Awesome opportunity, Ms Knight. I will definitely be there.
Counting down the hours with everyone else! Good luck to all.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'll be here at 8am with my finger on the 'send' button!
I'm in! Looking forward to it.

Wild stuff, this! You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take, so I'm warming up. See ya in the ayem! Oh... if you did the in-line early bird Black Friday thing, this should be your typical been-there done-that. Of course, I don't know if I'm in just yet...
I'm in! Wonderful opportunity.
It's time to make my dreams come true. I'll be up and at 'em, bright eyed and bushy-tailed, and ready to go in the morning! Thanks for the great opportunity.
I'm in! I can't wait for this. See you all at 5am! (Yay for the west coast!)
What a great opportunity!! Am I too late? Have 125 already posted?
I'm just testing here.
Love it! I'll be dropping one girl at middle school and trying to enter before I have to drop the other at upper elementary. Hope my computer's feeling speedy tomorrow!

See you all in the morning!
Does anyone know if the entry needs to be in the body of the email or as an attachement, and if an attachment, what format? PDF, Word?
Thanks!
Testing...
as I understand it you copy paste from word into the body of the email the 3 page initial email and then the others are word attachments.. but I would look at the post again just in case :)
I can't wait to enter!
EEEK!
I was preparing my email with my pages tonight in case I had the good fortune to make it into the first 125 comments.
I ACCIDENTALLY HIT "SEND."
Please excuse me! I wasn't trying to jump the gun.

This is going to be a blast!
Just wondering if I'm the only one sitting here at 7:36 am waiting til I can hit the "enter" button, LOL
This is a fantastic opportunity. Best of luck to ALL entrants.
I'd like to thank the Knight Agency in advance for giving this opportunity to us.
I woke up from a dream that I overslept and missed this. I don't think I've awakened so quickly and fully in quite a while.
How bad is that? Have to know if anyone else had a similar dream last night!

Here's hoping.
My pen name is Scooter Carlyle, I would be honored if you could represent my novel, THE RIDER OF NEALRA.
Dear Ms. Knight:
What a great opportunity! I saw Lucienne Diver speak at the Pro Workshop last July at the RWA Conference in Orlando and would be so honored to be represented by your agency!
My novel has been reviewed by Wild Rose Press and they have asked for a few revisions and requested re-submission.
Having representation such as The Knight Agency would not only be a great Christmas gift, but a dream come true!
Thank you!
Kahlen Aymes
Great reason to set the alarm. I'd love to be one of the 125 - what a way to start a writer's day.

Will 1000 comments sent to the same address between 8:00 and 8:01 disrupt the internet? We shall see.
But what an amazingly creative way to uncover creativity!
Congratulations.
