Speed Dating w/ Deidre: Contest Amendment
Okey dokey folks. We've noticed that many of you were a bit confused by exactly where to post your comment, and placed it in the OLD contest announcement post rather than the NEW post that went up today. We worked hard to eliminate any loop holes from the rules, and felt it was clear where to post this morning in the "official" spot, but don't want to overlook the fact that so many posted elsewhere. So, that said, Deidre has agreed to fold the first 50 commenters from the OLD post into the contest. So, if you posted there -- all is not lost. Same deadline applies. Send it to us by 2pm ET. Contests@KnightAgency.net. Got questions? Ask us here.
BTW, we'll have a list up of the winners (all 175) in a bit.

Thank you. That is truly above and beyond! Sent in my pages. I appreciate all you do to keep the process exciting, which helps keep the writing creative.
Could you clarify which email address to send it to? I see both contestS@ ... and later in the Important Details section it says contest@ ...
Thanks!
I assume we're now waiting for our confirmation emails to send in our 3 pages. Yippee!
It's contests, plural, but actually both emails route to us -- plural and singular. However, officially, it's contests@knightagency.net. If you sent it via contest@knightagency.net (no "s"), it came through. I apologize for the typo, but it's nothing to worry about if you did it either way.
Someday, when agents speak of contests at conferences, they’ll feature a Powerpoint on WHAT NOT TO DO, flash a photo of my bewildered face, and discuss how I blew this entirely. My son hovered over me like a TSA agent ready to frisk me... because he was late to school. I couldn’t navigate the Blogger comments correctly, I sent the first three pages, not a query, yada, yada. Even the dog laughed at me. I landed somewhere in the 200’s. Ah! Que sera, sera. Thanks for the opportunity nonetheless.
I was commenter 111 in the contest site but I didn't receive an email inviting me to send in my pages. Should I send them anyway or wait?
Just to be clear, the 50 are from the first 50 comments starting at 8:00AM, correct? I ask because some comments started prior to the 8:00AM time.
@ Sandy -- Send it now. Once you figure out you're in, you have until 2pm ET to send in the 3 pages.
@Vicki -- Yes, they have to have an 8:00am time stamp.
Jia,
Thank you. I did send it to no-"s" already and won't resend.
I sent my 3 pages @8:20 AM, does that mean I'm in?
Yay! Thanks! I'm back in. Sending pages . . .
Thanks Laurel. I double checked. We got it.
Yes, you're in katywriter, as long as your comment was one of the first 125 in the new "official post" or one of the first 50 in the old contest announcment post.
So those of us who fought the traffic and posted our comment five times at 8:00 exactly, only to have it finally show up at 8:02 (and just about 30 posts too late) would have been better off posting on the old post? Guess I should have gone over to the old post... Oh well, good luck everyone who got in.
Jia,
When I posted at 8:20 there was 230entries at the old post, does that count?
Kathryn
So do we wait for confirmation emails or do we go ahead and send the pages if we're in the top 125? Thanks,
@ Shane -- At the end of the day you can't please all of the people all of the time, but we're doing our level best to accomadate as many folks as possible. We are definitely thankful that you and everyone else chose to participate, and appreciate the fact that many made special accomadations to be able to enter so early in the morning. There will be other contests, and for us this has certainly been a learning experience that will inform future events.
I hope you'll stick with us till next time.
All Best,
Jia
Oh wow--so if we posted in the correct spot--we needed to be within the first 75 to make it in, then?
A tad confused.
@ Hope -- Not sure where you got the number 75 from... However, I've checked and you were 109 in the original post. So you're in. Send the pages. Thanks!
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
Oh, thanks! I read in the "additional 50 folded in" and mistook that to mean that the 125 were coming from the first 50 in the WRONG thread, then only the first 75 of the CORRECT thread to make the "125" total. Thanks so much for the clarification. I'm so pleased to have the opportunity.
Thanks so much for this contest and opportunity!
~Raquel Rodriguez
Hi Jia,
I put this comment in the official comment trail post for the contest, then saw the post to ask questions here. So I'm cutting and pasting.
My entry comment on the official contest blog put up this morning was comment #10. I was rushing so put in a blog nickname - Syd13. That's me, Cindy Procter-King. 3 pages sent off id'ing me as Syd13. Hope it's okay I used a blog nickname. Somehow I thought that was the idea, and then noticed when all the other 8 a.m. posts came through that people were putting their real names either in the post or name/URL.
Thanks for this opportunity, Deidre!
And, thanks, Jia, for answering all our questions.
Do we post the three pages in the body of an email as well or in a file? I'm sorry but I've read the rules and don't see anything mentioning it.
Thanks again for this opportunity
And, look, I spelled my own name wrong in my last comment. I've been up too long!
Yikes! Let's keep it friendly...
@Cheryl OD-- I feel your morning school rush pain! I think I'd have had better luck as a west coaster...sitting at my computer in the dark with sleeping kids...
Good luck to all! Thanks for this great contest-- maybe some other fab Knight Agency agent will keep the party going? ;)
Okay guys, as you might have noticed I deleted a few comments... This is a positive space, and we are not in the business of encouraging negativity. We are thankful and grateful for all of you that participated, and ask that everyone be respectful and kind to each other.
@Cindy -- You're fine.
@Melissa -- Send the 3 pages in the body of an email.
Wow, glad both emails go. Thankfully I copied and pasted from the post :) Fingers crossed for everyone.
truly great that you've worked with so many eager participants and took into account indviduals' tendency to interpret information differently.
Good luck on finding the best client possible.
Qwillia
Jia,
I was just wondering what number my comment was in the posting? I don't remember.
Kathryn
Personally, I think it's wonderful that you've adjusted the rules to fit in the ones that posted the wrong place. It's easy to do--especially when you're anxious and nervous. It's easy to miss something on a long post--which I'd almost done myself. I wouldn't have minded if only the first 75 had made it from the correct thread--but must admit I'm glad I misunderstood the information!
I've spent hours trying to decide which of 3 stories to send! Have 3 done--just don't know which is the best!
It's sweet of you to keep posting and allaying fears!
The number of people posting only goes to show that this is a much-desired agency to gain representation with!
Oh no! Jia, I had the same question as Melissa because I didn't see anything in the rules stating whether the first 3 pages should be in the body or as an attachment, but stupid me sent as an attachment.
Should I resend? Or am I disqualified. :(
Definitely above and beyond, Deidre. Your generosity is definitely a great welcome to the Christmas season, and a sign of a very caring (and professional) individual.
Congratulations to everyone who made it in, and special congratulations to Deidre's lucky 25!
Good luck to all those who made it into the top 125!! I missed it by 6! Ugh! :)
Jia,
Hey you guys call the shots, my only gripe was that those on the "old" post would not have faced the same traffic slam. I (as I'm sure many others) got bumped out several times while trying to post at 8am on the nose. So those 50 who posted on the old post sort of circumvented the rules while making an honest mistake. Of course, on the flip side, those people on the old post would have been posting on the new post (had they not made the miscue) which would have tied up the new post even more... So I guess those are the breaks. I suppose I can blame my DSL connection for getting trumped by all the FIOS... :)
I sent mine from work on webmail - more nerve-wracking than using my home email. I pasted in the body of the email and used plain text with a space between paragraphs in case the formatting of the MS messes things up. It still didn't get rid of line breaks, though. Grrr...
Hope that's okay!
Thanks, Jia.
Thanks, Jia, for posting the list. In the short period of time it took me to type in my name and a very brief comment this morning, the list went from 3 ahead of me to 27. Then I spent the next mumble minutes making sure I'd sent my pages to the right email address. Nervous? Who, me?
OK. I tried. Didn't make it, but that's the fun of it, right? it did give me fodder for my blog today. Maybe some others will relate. ; )
http://aneclecticmuse.blogspot.com/
Jia,
I sent my 3 pages much earlier this morning after counting the entries ahead of mine. I'm on the list, but want to make sure you got my pages from kdfleming1@hotmail.com
Congratulations everyone on making the cut.
Qwillia
Hi!
I'm on the list, and I sent my entry in earlier this morning. I sent to both the addresses listed: contest@ and contests@. I received an email from Elaine Spencer stating that entries sent to her personal address would be deleted. I just wanted to make sure my entry was received okay. Thank you for confirming.
Mary Kate Kopec
As one of the people who sat slurping coffee at 4:59 AM, refreshing the web site, thinking I was in the right place, finger hovering over the ‘publish comment’ button, and posted exactly as CNN and my computer rolled over to 5 AM, only to learn it was to the old contest post, I really appreciate your adding 50 of us to the pool.
Since writing is by definition a solitary endeavor, I love blogs and contests as a way to connect and get excited about the querying/submission process.
Thanks again for doing this. Good luck to all 175 entrants and happy reading Deidre!
Shane, I'm sorry you feel upset and frustrated about the process, which was certainly not my intention. I suggested to Jia that we add in those people from the other blog because so many of them were frustrated.
I'm sure you can imagine that this is a real madhouse here, trying to make this work. But it IS supposed to be fun and upbeat--a holiday thing. We'll host more events like this in the future, but remember--it's a *contest*. And not every one wins in any contest. :) Thanks for understanding and participating!
Hi Jia,
I'm on the second list but I sent my pages before the second list came up (I was counting from the wrong blog post). Should I re-send the pages?
Thanks so much,
Tessa Devan
Btw, next time I think we'll do a lottery. That probably would've been a better way to choose the names, but this was a first for us. Lesson learned!
Thank you Deidre! And thanks to you as well Jia for answering so many of our questions. I'm thrilled to have made it as one of the top 50.
My first three pages have been sent.
Good luck to everyone!!
I checked my email when I sent my entry in to be certain it went to the right address (contests@KnightAgency.net), but did not receive an acceptance email. Don't want to resend (and possibly annoy), but also don't want to lose out because something got gummed up in the ethernet works.
Thanks!
Hey Guys, me again. ;-) Just to be clear, we're not sending out acceptance emails (meaning whether or not your email was received in the first place). What we are sending you is notification whether or not you made it to the next round.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Deidre,
It's nothing... I'm not upset. I was frustrated for about a minute. But as you clearly stated, this was a "contest" and by definition they can be frantic and frustrating. You guys did a cool thing here, no complaints. If anything you've moved up to the top of my query list for the next round.
Oh, thank you! I sent my pages this morning after commenting, not realizing I was on the wrong post until I checked twitter and saw your link to the new post. I was so bummed! You're awesome for including us 50 goofs that posted on the old blog. Thanks so much! I never got any sort of confirmation email for my pages--just wondering, was I supposed to?
Jia, so just to be calm my own spinning thoughts, are you still going to randomly select 8 commenters who entered before 8:30AM EST not in the first 125 as was mentioned in the first update to the blog this morning?
Ah, never mind my question in the last comment. You must have answered it while I was typing. Thanks again!
Whoot! Made it in.
You TKA folks ROCK! Don't let any negativity get you down. This was fun, as you wanted it to be.
As for those who didn't make it in, they can still query--right?
Thank you SO MUCH! I can't tell you how thrilled I was when I heard you were including the other fifty.
Good luck, participants! How thrilling!
Jia, can you tell me whether I need to resend my pages or if I'm disqualified? I sent them as an attachment rather than pasting them into the body. I couldn't find anything in the rules that stated which way to do it. :(
I posted this comment in the old blog entry, and I'll repost here for clarity's sake. I did a boo-boo last night. I prepared the email with my three pages the night before just in case I made it in. Then, I hit, "Send," instead of, "Save."
I wasn't trying to get a jump on the competition. Copious apologies! I sent a short email immediately explaining the error. I sent the email again an hour or so ago and noted the error. The pages in each email are identical. Just delete whichever email you do not need.
Thanks so much for doing this!
Deidre/Jia:
I made the 125 this morning and sent my first 3 pages in the body of an email. I also sent a query letter in the body of the email. I saw on the contest rules to always include a cover page with name, contact info, genre, word count, etc. In my sleep deprived state this morning, I forgot the rules said a cover letter was only for Word document attachments that would come later in the contest.
I had planned on being bright-eyed and bushy-tailed this morning, but I was too excited to sleep last night. I hope I haven’t disqualified myself.
Thanks for the opportunity!
@ Amanda -- In a nutshell, we want it in the body of an email for the first round to protect ourselves from viruses. It is stated in the rules. You can resend it. No problem. :-)
@ Joan -- Don't worry about it.
@ Qwillia -- Yes, we will definitely still do that, as soon as I can sort my way through all of these emails, LOL!
@ Tessa & Mary Kate -- You're both fine. No worries.
Thank you! I must have missed that part in my haste to send and get in under the wire. Thanks for letting me resend!
And thanks again for running this contest!
Exciting! Thank you! I've sent in my pages. :)
Hi Jia!
Paranoia has kicked in, so sorry if this is an elementary question, but since I thought I was in one of the 125, I emailed my pages before the 125 had been announced.
I have just seen the announcement and 'huzzah!' I am in!
I don't want to annoy by sending duplicates, but also don't want to risk that everything received before the posting was deleted.
Should I re-submit, or just take a pill! ;)
E
Jia,
thank you for your help and the generous opportunity you and Deidre are offering.
don't forget to eat your lunch, and I'm sure Santa is going to have wonderful gifts in mind for you and the Knight Agency for being so nice this close to the holidays.
Hello. Thank you for a chance to get to know you better. This contest was kinda confusing - which blog? Which time zone? Guess I was too slow in figuring it all out (Happens when you're up all night writing...LOL) Congrats to the winners! DebboraWil@aol.com
Sent in my pages at 8:23 a.m. ET. I'm so grateful for this chance. Best of luck to all the other contestants!
@ Eleanorgj -- That's fine. That's what you were supposed to do. Just count up what number you are and send it in if you were 125 or lower. We just put the list up on the blog as an extra step to clarify who was in. Thanks!
Fiddle. I may have disqualified myself - even after reading the rules 500 times. I sent it as an attachment initially, but resent not long ago in the body of an email.
Crap. Just when I think I've cleared something up, I think I may have muddied it up more.
My first two emails, the mistaken one and the apology, came from my Scooter Carlyle email address. The third, the one I resent in case the first one was deleted for being sent too early, was sent from another address under my real name. Just forewarning you, though it looks fishy, both addresses are me.
I do hope I haven't disqualified myself accidentally. Forgive me for being so anxious.
Hi Jia,
Where and when are you going to post the eight extra winners (from the pool who posted before 8:30)?
Thanks,
Sharon Pochron
Hiya,
I sent in my three pages were they received? It's difficult to navigate the time difference between London and the US especially with the time differences within the country. Fingers crossed the pages reached you!
I just wanted to say thanks to Deidre and Jia for giving us all such a great opportunity during the festive season. I made the list by the skin of my teeth and am so grateful for it. Good luck to everyone!
Hi Jia, can you tell me when the 8 random names will be posted and where? Thanks again for this great opportunity!
~Raquel Rodriguez
This was a great idea, even though I didn't make it. I love the lottery idea. I'll keep an eye out for that in the future. Good luck to all who made it.
I'm looking for the 8 people who are able to send their query. Did I miss it?
Hey Guys, the eight query winners have been drawn and posted. See the newest post on the main blog page. Thanks!
Jia, thank you so much for the follow-up. :)
Mary Kate
Thank you so much! I woke up at five this morning to enter and after realizing that the "real" thread went up after I'd already gone back to sleep, I was ready to resign. But taking in the first 50 from the old post was tremendously gracious! Hopefully the pages were sent to the right place... I guess there was some confusion regarding the e-mail address, but I have a feeling contests@knightagency.com was the right choice.
Thanks again, this is a truly amazing experience. I can honestly say it's the best contest an author can hope to come across.
Warm wishes,

This is strange. My blogger name Moon Child ended up on the list of 50 from the old blog. Last time I checked this morning, it wasn't on the list.
I'm pleased to see my blogger name on the list, but I don't know if the 3 pages I e-mailed this morning around 5:00 a.m. were also received and I wouldn't have made the 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time deadline for sending them otherwise.
Oh, well, it was fun and stressful... c'est la vie.

Thank you (from #48) for including the extra 50 of us who were lost. I sent in my three pages this morning. Hope to hear from you for phase 2.
This has been fun.
I know you're not sending confirmation emails on receiving our pages but I read the instructions to not send the 3 pages unless we received an email to do so. I checked my email from the day job up until 2:00 and gave up that I didn't make it. Now I see I'm listed and it's way past 2:00. I just sent my pages. Will they be accepted?
Jia,
I would like to especially thank you for all of your help with answering our many questions and working so hard behind the scenes to make sure everyone is happy. You truly saved the day earlier and I can't thank you enough!!!
I appreciate all of the time and energy that you and Deidre, as well as everyone else at TKA, are putting into this contest! I'm sure there's a lot of stress over there to get everything in order and read by Thursday. I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I say that you and Deidre are true literary ninjas!

Hi Brenda,
I had a similar situation happen to me except I sent my 3 pages without a prompt. I didn't know I was leaving a comment on the old blog contest entry so I counted only 50 some comments before mine, assumed I was in the 125 range and sent my pages.
I doubt they were received though since they weren't requested.
I missed the deadline to resend them and will be out of town today and not near a computer.
Oh, well. I guess all these errors will improve the next contest.
Patricia
Hey Guys, this is my last time commenting in this particular post. I'm sure you will all have more for me in the annoucment post for the next round, LOL.
Anyways, I just want send out a general "it's fine" to everyone. From the comments I'm checking out here that I didn't answer yesterday, I can honestly say that. Also, many of you have emailed me with me personally to sort things out. If that's something anyone else wants to do, please feel free to contact me -- Contests@KnightAgency.net.
I apologize for the delay in addressing everyone here.
All Best,
Jia
Oh, one last thing! Thanks to Jen, Cathy, StephAlex, Raquel and everyone else I'm sure that I'm overlooking for the nice notes! :-)
