A Blog From Katherine Garbera

I'm so excited about the release of Sex With A Stranger from Brava. The title gives you a pretty good idea of what the story is about. Jane Monte goes to Vegas to try to redefine herself. A chronic good girl--very much like me, I must admit! She finds herself feeling betrayed by the rules she always followed. So she's decided to break them all and see if that doesn't net better results for her.

She meets Liam O'Roarke during a fire alarm at her hotel. They are attracted to each other and Jane thinks he's the perfect guy to be her vacation fling. And since Liam is evasive with his answers on certain things, she feels like he will be safe to keep in that stranger box. And the last thing she's looking for is a man who'll break her heart again.

Liam is keeping secrets from Jane. He's in Vegas to investigate a string of fires that are suspected to be arson but because they believe the arsonist is familiar with the casinos, Liam is undercover. His cover is one that fits him and his live-for-the-moment personality. But when he meets Jane, he starts thinking things he never has before. With her he isn't content to watch her flirt with other men or keep him at arm's length. He wants to know all the details of her life.

But his secrets keep a distance between them. And for the first time in his life he realizes that fires and fire fighting aren't enough. He wants something more with Jane.

I've never actually done anything wild unless you count dancing on tables! But there's a part of me that longs to throw off the shackles of what I know is right and try something different.

I have been to Vegas but have never really done anything truly wild. When I do I get that sick feeling in my gut like I'm going to get caught. And that's silly since I'm an adult and as long as I don't break the law the consequences are things I should be able to live with.

>>Have you ever done anything wild? If so, did you love the experience and find that it changed the way you looked at yourself or did it make you realize that you were happiest as the person you were?

Take Home Tuesday

The best day of the week is here! It's that glorious day where new releases hit the shelves at your favorite bookstore. If you are looking for a great read look no further. Whether you are looking for a sexy stranger, have a passion for fashion, or crave a dose of the paranormal we have a new release for you.

HUNTING THE DEMON by Jaci Burton

IN A WILDERNESS SEETHING WITH SIN AND SEDUCTION, THE CHASE IS ON.

Hunting demons for a living can have its moments. Especially when Shay Pearson’s latest quarry is the gorgeous bronzed surfer who just stepped out of the sea. Uncovering Nic Diavolo’s devilish side could prove Shay’s toughest assignment yet. Because while she’s acting as bait to snatch this sexy bad boy, Nic’s got a plan of seduction no woman—earthly or otherwise--can resist.

Caught between two warring realms, Nic needs to stay alive long enough to figure out who his enemies are. That includes the beautiful hunter who won’t let him out of her sight. And something far worse: A force of evil with an almost unimaginable goal – possessing Nic’s very soul. But the hunt really heats up when a guy who’s hotter than Hades and a woman who’s afraid to love join forces, igniting an inferno of lust and longing that could send them into mortal danger...or straight into each other’s arms…

SEX WITH A STRANGER by Katherine Garbera

Look out Vegas, here I come…

NO RULES, NO STRINGS…

Jane Monte is done with being a good girl. She followed all the rules, and look where it got her—divorced from a cheating accountant who cleaned out her bank account. Now she’s got a new career, a new wardrobe, and a new attitude—she’s going to throw caution to the wind while she’s in Vegas on business, and have herself a steamy fling. She never let herself fall for a bad boy—now she wants to be a bad girl, and see what letting loose and having fun is all about. And sexy gambler Liam O’Rourke is just the kind of man who puts the “sin” in Sin City…

AND DEFINITELY NO CLOTHES

Liam may look like a gambler, but that’s only his cover story. A firefighter by trade, he’s in town to investigate a string of fires in his friend’s hotel, not to indulge his own desires. But he can’t deny that the spark between him and Jane is a blaze from the moment they meet. If the gorgeous PR executive wants to learn how to be bad, he’s happy to teach her every sensual trick he knows, as long as she understands that what happens between them has to stay in Vegas. But releasing Jane’s wild side uncovers desires Liam never knew he had—and before long he’s determined to keep the fire they’ve started burning forever…

UNDERCOVER IN HIGH HEELS by Gemma Halliday

Secret affairs, hunky gardeners, and housewives desperate enough to bare it all… welcome to Magnolia Lane, TV's hottest new prime time show. A place where L.A. shoe designer Maddie Springer should be in fashion heaven. That is until the body of a rising young starlet is found dead on the show's set. Now it's up to Maddie to sift through a leading lady with a secret, an actor on the verge of a nervous breakdown, a sexy cyber scandal, and one tabloid reporter who'll stop at nothing to get the story of the century. Not to mention Maddie's hot-cold relationship with the case's familiar lead detective, Ramirez. In a world where secrets, lies, and deception can earn you an Oscar, Maddie plays the role of a lifetime to catch Hollywood's hottest killer.

But if she doesn't watch her step, her fifteen minutes of fame just may be her last.

DOUBLE DATING WITH THE DEAD by Karen Kelley

Between the sheets takes on new meaning when you’re…

DOUBLE DATING WITH THE DEAD

HANDS OFF MY ASTRAL PLANE!

Psychic Selena James is having the kind of week that makes her happy to talk to the dead. First, famously skeptical (and sinfully sexy) writer, Trent Sanders, called her delusional on TV. Next, her outraged mother publicly challenged him to spend two weeks with Selena at the haunted Garvey Hotel. Now, if Selena can’t prove ghosts exist, she’ll answer to Trent’s private wager: one night in his bed. It doesn’t take any psychic abilities to know Trent could satisfy a woman’s every fantasy. And she may find out very soon, if the two sex-starved ghosts in residence have their way…

Trent Sanders doesn’t believe in anything he can’t see, taste, or touch, and what he sees right now he would definitely enjoying tasting and touching. Selena James might be a bit kooky, but she’s also blessed with a body that could certainly raise the dead, if not talk to them. She’s even got a wicked sense of humor, like when she pinched his butt and insisted it wasn’t her, but one of the “ghosts.” Riiiiiight. But as things move from “haunted” to extremely hot, Trent’s starting to believe the paranormal is a one-way—make that four-way—ticket to paradise…

Q&A Thursday

Yet another Thursday has rolled around, and here I am to answer your questions! I don't have any fun themes to offer like last week, I'm afraid, but then it's a tad early on the west coast, and I'm still waiting for my first cup of coffee to kick in. However, I'm sure all will be properly functional by the time I need to come up with some witty replies for you.

So? What'll it be? First five questions get an answer. I'll try to keep an eye out and let you know when we've reached quota for the day. Meanwhile, put your thinking caps on and come up with those things you really want to know, the ones that have you scratching your head in confusion or frustrated beyond measure. I'm here to help!

To Blog Or Not To Blog by Lauraine Snelling

To BLOG or not to blog, that is a question many of us face. And even as I type this, I have more questions. Like where do all the writers that blog find the time? That is my main one. Am I making too big a deal out of it? But then I write a monthly column called Readin’ & Writin’ from Lauraine for a local newspaper and a month has zipped by and it is due again. I started to write a letter from Ingeborg, my main character in The Red River of the North historical series, with a goal of once a week and I haven’t touched it in months. I miserably failed as a girl at diaries also.

So, what is this writer to do? A woman I talked with at RWA the year before last says she doesn’t have a blog of her own, but appears often on other blogs as a guest, like I am doing here. Sounds like a good idea, but if one is not blog savvy, how do you find other blogs? And when I’ve been asked, I’ve been near to a deadline and hate to take the time away.

I know there are good answers and most of you would probably have them for me since you are doing blogs. I suspect one of the necessities for a blogger is super human discipline. That’s right. The big D word. I heard a woman say one time that she was going to start a diet and she knew she’d be successful because she’d been told it took discipline and she must have a lot of that since she’d never used it.

So, here am I, writing when I should be heading for bed because first off, I conveniently forgot to do this earlier today and secondly---any excuse is a good excuse. Now that I’ve revealed what a wimp I am, let me tell you about my new book that was officially released today but has been in some stores or online lots longer.

A bit of back story here: I love horses, have all my life and never outgrew it like my father said I would. Had my first pony at age five and no horses in my life at the present. That’s another dream to come true. So I sometimes write about horses and kids and romance and you got the picture? When you weave all those threads together like I did in Breaking Free, along with some suspense and humor, you get a good story. I read a little blurb in Reader’s Digest about TRF, Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, cut it out, learned all I could about it online, and filed the info away for sometime. The moral here is keep every idea that comes your way, you never know when it will come in handy.

By the way, Breaking Free is the name of the horse in the book, an ex track star who has gone berserk. I fell in love with him before I met the other characters. Maggie Roberts is serving time for a terrible lapse in judgment and soon up for parole when the rehab program for Thoroughbreds is brought to the prison where she is incarcerated. She joins the program and enter, kicking and screaming, Breaking Free. Add a boy with Spina Bifida who rides at a Therapeutic School, a service dog named Bonnie, a tri-color Basset and a father who will do anything to help his son.

I love this book. Writing it was not easy, but it made me laugh and cry and I hope my readers experience that too.

I write historicals also, in fact, I’m best known for my Red River series. I have written horse books for girls, twenty-one of them, all out of print now. Isn’t that the pits? There are several non fiction books in my past and possibly more. Who knows what will happen next in this crazy business? One other little tidbit. A real town in North Dakota has adopted my fictional town of Blessing and we are doing all kinds of exciting things there, like build a sod house, move a log cabin to the heritage square and have all kinds of events. I have a web site called www.blessingnd.com and we are developing product like shirts and post cards and aprons for a new page to come on www.LauraineSnelling.com.

Isn’t this fun? Guess I’d rather do that stuff than blog so thanks for letting me run on here. And congratulations on all you’ve accomplished and the readers you’ve entertained.

Blessings,

Lauraine Snelling

Great Thoughts From Karen Kelley

My husband hates when I near the end of a book. I always want to remodel something—anything. Do y’all get like that? You just have to change a room around?

Problem is, my deadlines are shorter than they were a year ago so I feel like a directionally challenged bee on steroids in a field of flowers that are in full bloom. I think it’s driving my husband crazy. I’ll have to meditate on that.

I like to meditate. I’ve come to the conclusion meditation is another word for procrastination but it sounds better. “I’m meditating, don’t disturb me.”

People ask me where I get my ideas for my books. Double Dating With The Dead comes out the end of August. It’s about a psychic and a skeptic in a vacant hotel with two horny ghosts. Maybe I’ve been meditating too much, or inhaling too much incense. Note to self: Lay off the incense.

Ideas are everywhere. I just try to have fun with mine.

Have a good day!

Must Know Monday

We have huge news here at TKA. 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN made number three on the New York Times bestseller list. Of course as you can imagine we are all beyond excited about this news and couldn't wait to share it with you. I've included Revell's press release about this happy news for you all to read.

90 Minutes in Heaven Enters Top 3 on NY Times Bestseller List

Word of mouth continues to drive book sales to over 2 million

Grand Rapids, Mich. –Three years after its release, 90 Minutes in Heaven (Revell, 0-8007-5949-4; $12.99), has climbed to the number three position on the New York Times Paperback Non-fiction Bestseller List. The book has now been on the list for 40 weeks and has 36 of those weeks in the top ten.

90 Minutes in Heaven tells the story of his car accident, his time in heaven, and his grueling recovery. The book has also appeared on a number of other bestseller lists, including USA Today, Publishers Weekly’s Paperback Religion Bestsellers, the CBA Christian Marketplace Top 50, and Christian Retailing’s Top 100 and Booksense.

“We published 90 Minutes in Heaven based on the strength of Don Piper’s testimony. However, we did not fully anticipate its wider appeal as a book of comfort and promise. People have told us that they have bought multiple copies of the book, many to share with people who have just lost a loved one or who are going through a difficult time,” said Dwight Baker, president of Baker Publishing Group.

“Don’s willingness to speak and share his story all over the world, has also played a huge part in the book’s success. People who hear him cannot help but be moved deeply by his story,” Baker continued.

Though EMTs on the scene determined Piper had been killed instantly after a semi had swerved into his lane, crushing his car, a Baptist preacher who had stopped to offer help began to pray for him as he lay lifeless under a tarp, still in his car. But Piper was unaware of the chaos swirling around his body on earth—he knew only that he was surrounded by loved ones and friends, magnificent light, a sense of pure peace and the most glorious music he had ever heard.

“I’m thoroughly convinced that God answers prayer. Answered prayer is why I’m still alive. …I have an unquestionable belief that God still is in the miracle business. Too many people read about the supernatural in the Bible and think, That’s the way it was in biblical times. I’m convinced that God continues to do the more-than-ordinary. Every day I thank God that I’m a living, walking, talking miracle,” writes Piper.

Don Piper has been an ordained minister since 1985. He has been covered by numerous media outlets including Newsweek, “The Today Show,” “The 700 Club,” “At Home Live,” and TBN’s “Praise the Lord.” Piper leads conferences and retreats in the United States and abroad.

Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, offers practical books that bring the Christian faith to everyday life. They publish resources from a variety of well-known brands and authors, including their partnership with M.O.P.S. (Mothers of Preschoolers) and Hungry Planet.

Cowboy, Take Me Away by Charlene Teglia

Cowboy, Take Me Away by Charlene Teglia

There is something about cowboys. The jeans, the chaps, the boots. The way they stand, the confidence and strength in their movements, the angle of a cowboy hat pulled low and the shiver-inducing sound of a slow, western drawl. They represent wide open spaces and deep silences and nights spent under a canopy of starry skies. They’re romantic figures, larger than life. It’s easy to see why the Dixie Chicks sang, “Cowboy, Take Me Away”. After a stressful day, being swept up on horseback by a sexy man sounds pretty good to me. And riding off into the sunset together makes for an idyllic happily ever after.

Wild Wild West introduces three cowboys and the women brave enough to tame them against the backdrop of Missoula, Montana, where the newcomers clash with the conservative old guard in the city John Updike called “the Paris of the 90s.”

I had a lot of fun writing to a soundtrack of Dixie Chicks songs mixed with Big & Rich, remembering what it felt like to speed along a Montana highway. I put in sheep ranching and a glimpse of the Montana wool industry (did you know this state produces 4 million pounds of wool a year?). I daydreamed over the creak of leather and the way hay smells in the sunshine and the men who came to life in my imagination, all individual but with key characteristics and values in common. Men of honor. Men with staying power. Men of the west, heroes.

If your heroes have always been cowboys, I hope you’ll enjoy an erotic contemporary take on a classic romance theme. And if you’ve never picked up a cowboy novel, I hope you’ll give Wild Wild West a try. You might find the fantasy universal, even to the most confirmed city-dweller who’d never trade her Jimmy Choos for Tony Lamas.

Take Home Tuesday

Today is a take home Tuesday you don't want to miss. With so many terrific novels releasing today you are sure to find a new book for your keeper shelf. Have a great reading day everyone!

New inspiration from the million-copy bestselling author of 90 Minutes in Heaven.

Don Piper's 90 Minutes in Heaven has sold more than a million copies and has been translated into 12 languages. Now, from "The Minister of Hope" comes the follow-up that millions of readers have been waiting for.

On January 18th, 1989, Don Piper died in a car accident. Ninety minutes later, after a preacher prayed over him, Piper came back to life with an extraordinary story. He'd been to heaven. So began the phenomenon of 90 Minutes in Heaven.

Now, for the millions who look to him for inspiration, Piper offers the hope that if he could survive his ordeal after the accident, then others can survive whatever life circumstances they're going through and grow in God's love through the experience. For Piper, heaven is a certainty-and so is God's grace. Relying on that assurance, believers can transform pain into purpose and troubles into blessings, finding joy in life even when life turns out not to be what they expected.

In one of the most searingly erotic Westerns ever penned, Charlene Teglia breaches uncharted territory. But reader beware: this tale is hotter than hell. The faint of heart should turn back now…

Three city girls from Seattle are enjoying a night out at a chic coffee house in downtown Missoula , Montana , the heart of the old West. When a gang of cowboys mosey in looking for trouble, they find trouble of the best kind… and these boys are primed and ready to ride. There’s Gabe, a hard-bodied rancher who’s discovered some imaginative new uses for rope. Chet, a rodeo cowboy who’s charmed the pants off more than a few country girls and vows to remain a bachelor for life. And Reuben, a former Army ranger with a taste for edgy sexual games. As the couples embark on a scorching night of passion and play, they experience the most exquisite pleasure—and discover kinky new thrills they never dared to imagine. Because when it comes to knocking boots, cowboys do it best…

FOR PROFIT AND PASSION…RAGE AND REVENGE.

FROM BLACK WIDOWS AND LONELY HEARTS TO ANGELS OF DEATH.

WHY DO WOMEN KILL?

How many of us are even remotely prepared to imagine our mothers, daughters, sisters or grandmothers as fiendish killers? For centuries we have been conditioned to think of serial murderers and psychopathic predators as men—with women registering low on our paranoia radar. Perhaps that’s why so many trusting husbands, lovers, family friends, and children have fallen prey to “the female monster.” In this fascinating book, Peter Vronsky exposes and investigates the phenomenon of women who kill—and the political, economic, social and sexual implications buried with each victim.

From history’s earliest recorded cases of homicidal females to Irma Grese, the Nazi Beast of Belsen, from Britain’s notorious child-slayer Myra Hindley to ‘Honeymoon Killer’ Martha Beck to the sensational cult of Aileen Wournos—the first female serial killer-as-celebrity—to cult killers, homicidal missionaries, and our pop-culture fascination with the sexy femme fatale, Vronsky not only challenges our ordinary standards of good and evil but also defies our basic accepted perceptions of gender role and identity.

Must Know Monday

Mediabistro.Com had a very interesting post about ARCs and Amazon.com that you don't want to miss out on.

Monday, Aug 06

Amazon Offers Early Galleys, Online Payments

Though Amazon tried this idea once before without much success, the company has decided that sending out ARCs to hand-picked customer reviewers is a good thing, Ergo, Amazon Vine, which will "help our vendors generate awareness for new and pre-release products by connecting them with the voice of the Amazon community: our reviewers. Vine members, called Voices, may request free copies of items enrolled in the program and have the ability to share their opinions before these products become generally available." The folks at LibraryThing note similarities to its own early release program.

Also, Marketwatch reports that Amazon will offer an online payments service that could compete with similar services from eBay and Google. Web services evangelist Jeff Barr said in a blog post that the company is formally introducing Amazon Flexible Payments Service, or FPS, which is intended to let developers build secure payment systems for their Internet sales. "As of this post FPS is now in a limited beta," Barr said, adding however that "the entire payment system is fully functional."

Debut Author

That’s me. When I think about it, it’s pretty awesome. The definition of debut is “first public appearance”, which I guess pertains to my book more than me. Because, like most new authors, I’ve been at this awhile. Even if you don’t count dabbling and scribbling for most of my life, I’ve been writing seriously for six years.

During that time, I finished 4 novels and half a dozen novellas of various genres. I flirted with steamy romance, then discovered my style wasn’t steamy enough. I tried contemporaries, which got good feedback but ultimately netted only rejection letters. Historicals were my first love, since I enjoy reading them so much. Melding fiction with history appeals to me because I learn something while I’m being entertained.

So I wrote one. I loved that story, but it was a little outside the box, and it got rejected. Many times. It’s tough not to take that personally when you put so much of yourself into your work. Then again, I can be a tad stubborn. I wanted to write unusual historicals and decided to give it another try. That book became Fearless, an Irish medieval with fairies and magic woven through the story. I’m proud to say it’s hitting the bookstores this month. I can’t wait to walk into our local Borders and see my first novel on a shelf alongside the books from all those talented storytellers.

A dream come true, for sure. But now I’m worried about the next one. It’s another unusual historical, and I wonder how it will be received. Will an editor fall in love with it? Will readers? I finally understand what several veteran writers have said about this creative, highly competitive business. It doesn’t get easier. It gets harder.

Becoming a debut author is a wonderful accomplishment, and I’m grateful to everyone who helped make that happen. But now I realize it’s only the beginning.
